LOUTH AND DISTRICT HOSPITAL. 136th REPORT TO THE GOVERNORS & SUBSCRIBERS When we entered on the year 1939, we little imagined what a momentous one it was to prove for the world and for our Hospital , but, on looking back, we find that each month has contributed some noteworthy feature to our Hospital year. Here is a resume of the work done during the year. Patients. 35 patients were in Hospital at the beginning of the year, and 913 have been admitted. Of these patients, 765 were cured, 96 relieved, 11 transferred, and 41 died, leaving 36 in Hospital on December 31st. 183 patients have been admitted to the Maternity Ward, and 181 births recorded. 147 children have been admitted to the Children’s Ward Operations. Major operations numbered 495, while minor operations and small services rendered to outpatients amounted to 726. 1117 dressings were done for out-patients. Electrical 495 X-Ray examinations have been made. In the Department Treatment Room 2004 electrical and massage treatments have been given. Ophthalmic 196 consultations were held and 5 ophthalmic Department operations performed. Dispensary 122 patients attended at the Dispensary, the net cost per patient having been 7/5J. Towl, of Louth, towards the purchase of an Iron Lung. By the time this amount had been raised, we had received and accepted the gift of an Iron Lung from Lord Nuffield. The donors to Mr. Towl’s fund kindly allowed their gifts to be diverted to other uses, and wre have thereby been enabled to equip our Theatre with new instruments and sterilizing drums which were badly needed. £20 from the Sutton-on-Sea branch of Toe H. This sum was also originally intended for the Iron Lung Fund, but instead, we bought with h a new Stretcher-Trolley, a Tilting Bedstead, and an Oxygon Cylinder stand. £47 7s. 6d. from the Police Hospital Ball, the first /event of its kind, which we hope will be an annual one. £78 2s. 9d. from the Louth Amateur Operatic Society. It is much regretted that their efforts are for the time being in abeyance, and we hope that soon they may become active once more. >, £30 from the Louth Branch of Toe H. towards a new wireless installation. The Radio Relay service has effected a satisfactory installation, and the patients are most appreciative. £67 5s. Id. from the Grateful Patients1 League. £125 from the Horticultural Society’s show in August—a record sum from a record show. To all organisers and promoters of these efforts we offer our sincerest thanks. Their success has been due to the vast amount of thought and work contributed by all concerned, for which we are most grateful. Motor Badges and the purchase and sale of pigs, have again brought in £56 15s. 6d. For this wTe have to thank Mr. Gillot, who is untiring in his thought and care for the Hospital welfare. Horticultural Society. A special word of appreciation must be accorded to the organisers of the Show in August. Again favoured with brilliant sunshine it was carried through with its accustomed; efficiency and smoothness from opening till midnight, thanks to the unflagging and able work of all concerned, who were amply rewarded by being able to hand over the remarkable sum of £125, almost double the recordset up in 1938. We regret that we must await the return of normal times before we can once again enjoy,, and reap the benefit of, a Show. Contributory Associations. In last year’s report we had occasion to congratulate the Louth Association on reaching the target of £500. For 1939 this total has been surpassed by £40, an eloquent tribute to the unremitting labours of all those responsible for the administration and working of the Association. The Hospital Aid Association during 1939 repeated its high level of contributions, which speaks volumes for the patient untiring work of the collectors. Mayoress’ Pound Days, organised by Mrs. L. J. Lill, brought their usual stream of people with gifts from far and near, amounting to £10614s. 5d. in cash, and goods valued at £85 16s. 2d. Linen Guild. As was foreshadowed in the 1938 report, the Ladies’ Linen Guild has grown very satisfactorily during the past year. It held a Garden Fete in June, bringing to its funds £49 17s. Od. and has contributed most of the bed and household linen required by the Hospital for the 12 months under review. At the outbreak of War, it formed a Hospital Supplies w'orking-party, and has stored away a large quantity of stores of dressings,, swabs, etc., against emergencies. It is a very live branch of the Hospital’s organisation, and we thank all its members.a Legacies. The following legacies have been received during the year. £393 8s. 9d. from the late Mr. G. Lancaster. £50 from the late Mr. Joseph Smith. £139 11s. 4d. a second instalment from the late- Miss E. Savile Smitt’s Trust. I »' ; ■ ' r . J A_i 1 A house in Mablethorpe left to us by the late Mr. J. Hird, Saltfleetby. War. The outbreak of War in September last brought about much additional work and expenditure. We were instructed to consider ourselves a Hospital under the country's Emergency Medical Service, ready to receive service-sick and civilian and service-casualties. We therefore evacuated all patients possible, and on Sept. 3rd, only 6 were in on the general side of the Hospital, the Maternity Ward proceeding normally. As time went on, howrever, the work became normal again, although since September, we have admitted 26 members of the fighting services. Blacking out our numerous windows has presented a big problem, and the cost of that and other protective measures has been nearly £100. We have to give thanks to Mr. Eric West, of Tathwell, for the gift of 50 tons of sand for our sand-bagging. Without this gift, our A.R.P. expenditure would have been much increased. Repairs have been a large item, as the Allenby Ward, and the Hall and corridors were all re-decorated in the Spring. In the Autumn, too, the main drive was re-surfaced. Personal. The resignation of Mrs. E. Waddington on June 30th, last, severed a remarkable sequence of 21 years of loyal, devoted and capable service as Matron of our Hospital. The high standard she created and maintained and the general influence and trend of her administration during that long period did much towards the progress of this Institution, of which she and we have reason to be justly proud. Our best wishes go with her in the retirement she so richly deserves and the knowledge that she has the esteem and affection of her colleagues and a host of patients should help towards her true happiness. Her successor, Miss F. M. Allen, came to us on July 1st, from Macclesfield Royal Infirmary. The first months of her work have been made very difficult by War demands, but she can rest assured that she has the loyal backing of Staff and Board. Sister Waite left, too. in June, after 9 years work here, to take up a Matron’s post in Newcastle-on-Tyne, and our good wishes go with her in her new work. Our Board has seen changes during the year. Mrs. J. Bennett and Mrs. F. J. Ingoldby retired, after being closely associated with the Hospital for so many years, and rendering such invaluable service, for which they can never be adequately thanked. Their places were taken by Mrs. C. F Bennett and Mrs. J. R. Coney. Mr. P. Allison, who had been Hon, Treasurer since 1908, following members of his family who had held the office since its inception, felt that he could no longer carry out the duties, and the Board regretfully accepted his resignation, thanking hint most sincerely for bis constant interest and work throughout so many years. Mr. A. E. Wells, who, in a voluntary capacity, has for some years rendered valuable service at the Hospital Office as well as in other ways, was asked to undertake the Hon. Treasurership, and he has agreed to do so. Obituary. We regret that we have to record the death during the year of Mr. Joseph Smith, for many years one of the Vice-Presidents. The Louth Contributory Association has had a severe blow in the death of its co-secretaiy, Mr. W. Hubbard. He was a steady consistent worker, and both the Association and the Hospital Board, on which he represented the Association, will feel his loss severely. Honorary Medical Staf We were pleased to welcome Dr. A. H. Russell to the Medical Stall in April oi this year, after his six months’ residence m the town ; and we regret that Dr. J. E. S. Stephens has been called up for Army Service, lo ail members of our Hon. Medical Staff we once again tender our very grateful thanks for their constant kindly and skilful service to our patients. And so we enter on another year s work. What 1940 may have in store for us we do not know ; it will doubtless be a difficult year financially, as all prices are increased, and we shall be without many of our usual sources of income, so that we shall need all the help our supporters can give us. Their generosity in past years shows that they have the real welfare of the Hospital at heart, so that we feel that we need not be afraid, for the future, but can go forward, determined to be of the utmost service to our town and neighbourhood, whatever calls are made upon us. The interest in the Guild still increases, and we keep adding to our numbers. In 1939, 13 more ladies came along to help us. During the last week of February the drapers had window-shows of linen goods, and many friends of the Hospital aided the funds by sending along gifts of blankets, sheets, pillow-cases, towels, tea cloths, babies’ knitted vests, frocks, coats, etc., and we are very grateful to the undermentioned for their gifts : Mrs. P. Secretary & Treasurer : MISS PHILIPPA ALLISON, The Hill, Louth. 15th AnnuaS Report. Once again the Association can congratulate itself on a year of steady and satisfactory work, which has permitted the Treasurer to hand to the Hospital the sum of £1690 9s. 7d.,, Contributory Scheme payments have reached their highest total yet, that of £1372 5s. 7d., which speaks volumes for the amount of persevering work put in by the Collectors, and for the appreciation felt by all the members for the Scheme itself. Special efforts have raised £221 10s. 9d., a splendid total,, which also reflects a vast amount of hard work put in by the Organisers. We would specially mention Mrs. and Miss Harris, of Keddington, who have, for many years, organised a Sale of Work in their own garden. The Sale could not be held this year on account of the outbreak of war, but they still sent in £13, making a gross total of over £100 collected in this way. Flag-Days held at Mablethorpe, Trusthorpe and Sutton, and at North Somercotes, brought in £50 12s. 6d. Their organisers have our warm thanks. We hope the “black-out” will not, too badly, affect these special efforts this Autumn and Winter. Pound Day this year raised £82 7s. 9d. in cash as well as £80 12s. 6d. worth of groceries. Mrs. Lill, the Mayoress, who kindly organised the effort, was more than delighted with the hundreds of gifts which poured in from all sides. The year has, naturally, seen changes among our Collectors, Miss Davies has kindly carried on with the Covenham collecting, undertaken since the birth of the Association by Miss Dawson, who has now moved to Louth. Miss Cribb collects for Maiden well and Farforth, in place of Mr. Hopper, and ^Iiss Simpson has taken over Manby in place of Miss Garnett, wko left the district. Recently we have suffered the loss of Mrs. Johnston, of South Somercotes, who was one of the Foundation Members of the Association, and her work is being carried on by her daughter. The Hospital has rendered services to the Association as follows:—191 members were admitted as in-patients and occupied beds for 3,285 days, while 198 others attended as -out-patients. Operations (Major) 83 Ophthalmic Patients 57 (Minor) 66 ,, Consultations 103 X Ray Examinations 120 Dressings, Examinations, Electrical and Massage Minor Operations, etc. 164 Treatments 635. The Hospital, like many others at this time, has to allocate certain beds for War Emergency cases, but we ca» assure all our Collectors that our own people will not be neglected, and that all necessary work will be done for ordinary patients as usual. The War has entailed additionaj heavy expenditure, and we do hope that all the Collectors and Members will continue to give their whole-hearted support to the Hospital in the coming year, so that it may maintain its high standard of efficiency in the work it is doing for this extensive neighbourhood.
